Linderhof and Oberrammergau

The weather has not been good to us on this trip and Wednesday was no exception.

Our first stop of the day was Schloss Linderhof about 30 minutes away from our hotel.

Linderhof is small, rococo palace with gardens built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. The palace was very much influenced by the Sun King, Louis XIV and his palace at Versailles. While one can admire the workmanship and detail, I think that 'extravagant' is the best summary.

The Palace and the gardens from the palace.

Inside we saw

We then walked through the immaculate gardens to the grotto.

The grotto celebrates a scene, Venus's Grotto, from Wagner's Tannhauser and the music was playing as we entered. It is man made and pure Disney.

We returned to the bus in search of lunch a short distance away, up a windy, narrow road with good, but scary views of the village below.

After lunch, we went to view Oberammergau which has some lovely decorated houses and is not touristy. By now, it had started to rain.

We called into the local, ornate Baroque church with interesting carved pews. Each seat is numbered and there is a hook to hang your bag or coat.

Our last stop of the day was at the small village of Ettal, giving us an opportunity for a cup of tea to avoid the rain and to shop for beer made in the local monastery which was very impressive with a vast copula.
